The Best BBQ in Colorado?

I search far and wide for tasties wherever I may be. More often than not, I find restaurants are simply running an exchange of hand business. You give me money, I give you something considered edible, then we part ways.

Every once in a while, an eatery steps up their game and offers something truly special to their community of consumers. In this blog, I will try to responsibly report on my favorite dining spots, of all types throughout Colorado as well as my national and hopefully international travel in the coming year.

First honorable mention for what I consider to be the best straight up BBQ in Colorado is:

Georgia Boys BBQ Company – I saw a Living Social deal for this establishment last month and I recalled a friend on Twitter mentioned them as well. I figured, why wouldn’t I go all in on discounted BBQ? That would be silly.

So on my commute home from Fort Collins to Boulder last night, I was chomping at the bit for something delicious and filling as I’d had a god damn rough kind of day. I realized I had this voucher for Georgia Boys BBQ Company and decided I’d pull off my route home and get me some grub.

Pulling up to an unassuming (and admittedly poorly lit) house, I thought, this can’t be it. But I was wrong. I peered inside the windows like a Lifetime Movie creeper and saw 3 dudes toiling away in the back kitchen. The place smelled of smoke and sweet and spicy sauces. I let myself in the front door and felt comfortable enough to walk straight back to the kitchen and ask for some help. The gentleman politely asked me to wait in the waiting area (which wasn’t obvious, because they’re under construction building an indoor seating area).

I told him to steer me in the right direction with my choice and this tall guy told me to “go big.” I obliged and got a plate of pork ribs, with sweet potato casserole and coleslaw. Accompanied with a piece of Texas toast and as much BBQ sauce as I wanted, I left with a to-go box of BBQ that smelled so amazing I was hard pressed not to pick at it while driving the remaining 10 miles home.

When I got home, the food was still pretty warm and I dug right in. Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures of the food or establishment for you. I was so hungry, I totally spaced on that part (bad food blogger mistake!). I can guarantee you that these ribs were worth any amount of driving and waiting you or I would have to do. Moist, flavorful, firm to the touch yet extremely tender. I took the two hottest sauces home with me in little containers and tried both with my ribs. Both had good spice and flavor. The “fire” hot sauce had a nice smokey kick on top of the heat that I preferred.

The coleslaw was solid. Well dressed, good acidic bite and crunch as well as nice creamy sauce mixed in. The sweet potato casserole was shockingly good as well with cooked for hours consistency and yet still a delicious crunch from the candied walnuts on top.

This place gets 9/10 points from me. They’ll probably get a perfect score once their indoor seating is finished too. This place is 100% somewhere you should go out your way to visit. They’ve even got glass bottles of soda for the nostalgic of you. Don’t wait! Go eat Georgia Boys BBQ Company now!

2009 Lamadrid Single Vineyard Bonarda Reserva

So I’m reviewing a wine from Argentina that ISN’T a Malbec… not, it’s not even a Carmenere or Cabernet Sauvignon… no my friends. This grape is Bonarda. It’s the first time I think I’ve ever had it and I suggest you get familiar.

In this beautiful bottle of wine lies a lot of minerality on the nose right off the bat with hints of smokey blueberry. The inky red color gives way to all kinds of juicy red fruits with a strong mid-palate and finish. A clean tasting wine, but grips your palate throughout. A pretty big wine with a bit of elegance.

This wine is a true sipper, but would go great with some grilled meats smothered in tangy, spicy BBQ sauce. Quite delicious!

2009 Onix Priorat Classic

I’ll start things right off with some wine reviews. My girlfriend got her hands on a case of mixed wine from a sponsor of her blog and I’m helping her review them. I have a tough life :-)

What we’ve got here is a mix of %50 grenache and 50% carignan from the Priorat region of Spain. A medium body wine, it’s color and mouth feel is light and smooth with moderate sweetness. Good tart flavors of red fruit. A good wine for drinking young as it’s not overly tannic.

Good wine for duck, chicken thighs, lean roast beef.

MMMMMM….. FOOD!

Welcome to my world! I’ve been blogging for the better part of the last decade about a whole variety of topics ranging from personal development, to politics, to my own career and relationships. Well, I wanted to start a blog for some time about something that I’m quite passionate about. That would be good food!

While I love to eat, I also love to prepare, cook, research and talk about everything related to food and wine. I love how it brings people together (and shuts up from time to time when things get really tasty!).

What will this blog be about? Here’s a general idea:

  • Recipes
  • Restaurants
  • Agriculture
  • Wine
  • Beer
  • Spirits
  • Farming
  • Cutlery
  • Kitchen Supplies

And if you know anything about me, you’ll know that I am extremely passionate about MMA and Music, so if I can ever integrate the concepts of fighting and food together (musical food fighting?!? Sounds fun!), you know I will!

I cannot wait to get started. So cheers to everyone! Eat, drink and be merry!

p.s. who can name the artist who this blog post title was  inspired by?
